Blind Runner Amarjeet Singh Sets Record, Completes 160-km Mumbai-Pune Run In Style!

63-year-old visually impaired marathoner Amarjeet Singh Chawla completed his first long distance run of 160-km long from Mumbai to Pune on Sunday, setting a new record among visually-challenged runners. Chawla’s run was to spread awareness about avoidable blindness and how to prevent it.

Famously known as ‘Sporty Sikh’, Chawla along with a group of fellow runners started his sprint from Goregaon Sports Club on May 31 at 5: 30 AM. They made their way through Panvel and Lonavala, along the old Mumbai-Pune highway, and reached Rabindranath Tagore School in Pune on June 2 with well over an hour to spare.

Chawla has so far completed 174 races – including 106 half marathons and 64 runs of 10-km. This 160km dash was his first long-distance run.

Amarjeet Singh Chawla lost his eyesight at the age of 40 and ran his first marathon at 48 in 2004. His first appearance on track was in 7-km dream run. During his inaugural run, he was escorted by former Indian captain Kapil Dev.

Since his first run, Amarjeet Singh Chawla has featured in about 101 running competitions and has won medals and trophies almost every year.
