Cricket is one of those games which is celebrated the most across the world, so are cricketers. Whenever a cricketer retires, the player enjoys an amazing farewell, an emotional goodbye, and a hope of never giving up on his fans. But there are a few cricketers who left cricket when it wasn’t expected when their fans were not ready for a sudden goodbye, cricketers who had to go through the worst phase of their retirement and ended their career on a sad note.
Navjot Singh Sidhu
90’s one of the most popular cricketers Navjot Singh Sidhu ended his career when it wasn’t expected. He was going good in his cricket days when got trapped in “cricket politics”. According to the sources Sidhu was heartbroken when he wasn’t chosen for a match and called unfit, and another player made sure that Navjot doesn’t get selected for World Cup. It’s unknown why Navjot took retirement so early but the player had a very long way to go.
The Australian player Nathan Bracken was going well. The player who was ranked World’s no.1 bowler but had a huge tragedy in his life. Nathan had an incurable knee injury after playing his ODI in 2009 and was out of the ICC Champions Trophy. The player tried a lot to get over his injury but wasn’t able to and in 2011 he announced his retirement. Nathan didn’t left silently but sued Cricket Australia for defective medical care.
Manoj Prabhakar was a well-known cricketer during the ’90s, he was best known for slow balls and was a good outswinger. This great performer’s career got destroyed on the basis of one bad performance. Manoj didn’t perform well in one match against Sri Lanka and on the basis of that match, he wasn’t selected for 1996’s world cup. This left the player heartbroken, and due to this incident, he decided to leave cricket forever.
The South African cricketer had a huge eye injury which imposed him to leave his career. When South Africa had a match against Somerset, Mark was wicket Keeping. Imran Tahir bowled a googly shot which hit the stump and got hit with Mark Boucher’s eye. Boucher was immediately taken to a hospital where he had a 3-hour long surgery. Mark was diagnosed with Lacerated Eyeball and soon announced his retirement.
Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman
VVS Laxman is considered one of the good players. Though nobody really knows what made the player retire so early, there are a few sources that reveal that during India and Australia match in 2011 VVS’s performance wasn’t up to mark. He was criticised by his colleagues and media that “cricketers must get retire after an age” Laxman wasn’t happy with such comments and decided to move out of cricket.
Phillip Hughes was a legendary player in Australia. The player was in his initial days when a big tragedy happened to him, even Phillip didn’t know what was about to come his way. In a match between South Wales and South Australia in 2014, a bawl got hit below the ear Hughes, he was immediately taken to a hospital and went into a coma after the incident. Hughes lost his life when he was just 25 when he left this world with his sudden death.
Well known for his cricket debut with a test match at the age of 20, kaif gained a lot of appreciation. He played brilliantly in Junior World Cup 2000. The player who scored 87 runs against a match with England in 2002, had a very bitter ending in his career. Gerg Chappell’s coaching didn’t help him in his career well, the cricketer played his last international match when he was just 26 and didn’t select for World Cup 2007. Kaif decided to get retire from cricket in 2018.
Saqlain Mushtaq is in the list of one of the best spin bowlers, he is another cricketer who ended his career because of his knee injury. He had unbearable pain in his knee and had to get operated for both knees. He played his last test match in 2004 and announced his retirement when he was just 28.
The English player was well appreciated for his skills, known as a “complete cricketer”. Everything was going well when suddenly in March 2018 Kevin took to his social media about his retirement. He said now it’s time that I must move on from the game and give time to my family. His fans were not ready for this and were left heartbroken.
James Taylor is another player from England. James had a heart issue and was diagnosed with “arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy”. He had to go through an operation and a defibrillator was fixed in his chest to manage his heart rate. It was important for him to take care of his heart so he decided to leave cricket when he was just 26.
Zimbabwe’s player Henry Olonga had a very early retirement. During the 2003 World Cup Henry wore a black band in his wrist which represented the “death of democracy”. He did so to discriminate against his country’s government. After this some cops from Zimbabwe came to arrest him he managed to not get an arrest. Playing for Zimbabwe again became very hard, afterwards, he announced his retirement.
Chanderpaul ranked no.8 among most runs scorer players in the world. The player was an Indo-Caribbean player. He got retired because the Nation Board told him that he will be issued a no-objection certificate only if he retires on a particular date. He 41 when he got retired, later Canderpaul started playing for Guyana.
The best batsmen from England announced his sudden retirement in 2015 after losing a series against West Indies. The player later revealed that he was going through a mental health problems. He had issues like anxiety and unmanageable stress, later announced his retirement.
