INDIA BEATS MALAYSIA TO CLINCH THIRD HOCKEY ASIA CUP TITLE

Indian Hockey Team ended the ten years of drought on 22nd October when they won the Asia cup title by beating Malaysia 2-1 in a nail biting competition. After defeating Bangladesh by a margin of 7 goals and thrashing arch rival Pakistan twice, India crushed all Malaysian hopes who were desperate to win their first title since the inception of the tournament.

India won its last Asia cup back in 2007 in Chennai and have been struggling to get back in form for a long time. There couldn’t have been a better start for team India’s new coach Marijne Sjoerd as it was his maiden tournament.

Lalit Upadhyay, SV Sunil, Akasdeep Singh, Sardar Singh and Manpreet Singh were the stars of the match whose brilliant effort allowed India to clinch the summit showdown.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to twitter to congratulate the India Hockey team. "Great game, great win! Congrats to our hockey team for winning the Asia Cup 2017. India rejoices at this stupendous victory", the Prime Minister said.

This is to be noted that India had earlier lost two games to Malaysia in the Azlan Shah tournament and the FIH World Hockey League semi-finals in London for which the India Hockey Team was harshly criticised.
