Palbinder Kaur Shergill, who was born in Rurka Kalan in Jalandhar district, made the Punjabis proud as she became the first turbaned Sikh woman to be nominated as judge in Canada’s Supreme Court on June 24, 2017. Shergill was only four year old when her family moved to Canada in mid-70s.

  •  She is a black belt holder in karate, and enjoys playing volleyball.
  • She is a music lover. She loves to play tabla and harmonium.
  • She is married to Amritpal Singh, who hails from Jagatpur village of Nawanshar district.
  • She has a daughter and two sons.

  • She received her law degree from the University of Saskatchewan.
  • Since 1991, she has represented the World Sikh Organisation (WSO) in Supreme Court in landmark cases including the right of Sikh students to wear the kirpan in Canada schools.
  • Palbinder Kaur was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2012. Queen's Counsel is a honourary title given by the province to lawyers who have made exceptional contributions to the profession.
  • She is also a recipient of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for community service.
  • She has extensive trial and appellate experience and has appeared before courts and tribunals across Canada.
  • Palbinder Kaur replaced Justice EA Arnold-Bailey who retired on May 31, 2017.
