Khalsa Aid Completes 20 Years: 5 Times When They Proved Humanity Is Above Everything

Khalsa Aid International, the UK based philanthropist group, has completed its 20 years of selfless service. Established in 1999 by Ravinder (Ravi) Singh, Khalsa Aid is providing support around the world to victims of natural and man-made disasters such as floods, earthquakes, famine and war.

Khalsa Aid is a charity based organization which works on Sikh principles of "Recognise the whole human race as one" and “selfless service to the humanity”.

On this special day, let’s have a look at 5 such instances when Khalsa Aid proved that ‘humanity is above everything’.

1999 Odisha Cyclone

On October 29, 1999, a super cyclone with a wind speed of 300 mph had struck Odisha, making it probably the greatest cyclonic disaster ever. Over 10,000 people were killed and thousands of people were displaced.

Khalsa Aid came forward to help the children with educational equipment. According to the reports, Khalsa Aid purchased educational materials for over 6,000 children.

2001 Gujarat Earthquake

The 2001 Gujarat earthquake, also known as the Bhuj earthquake, was occurred when India was celebrating its 52nd Republic Day. Earthquake, which lasted for over two minutes, killed more than 19,000 people and thousands were left injured.

Khalsa Aid members rescued the survivors by providing them with tents and clean drinking water.

2005 Pakistan Earthquake

On October 8, 2005, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake shook the Himalayan region of northern Pakistan along with few areas in Jammu & Kashmir. The 2005 earthquake was among the worst to ever hit the region.  Over 50,000 people lost their lives and lakhs were left displaced.

Khalsa Aid relief teams visited Balakot, a small town which experienced significant damage, to provide immediate help. They provided sanitation facilities by building temporary toilets to stop disease spreading through lack of sanitation.

2014 Jammu & Kashmir Floods

The devastating floods in Jammu and Kashmir claimed over 200 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands. Khalsa Aid's Asia relief team initiated two projects in the affected region. Their first priority was to provide emergency relief materials and then to help rescue people stranded by the flooding.

They provided relief items like clean drinking water, food and sanitary items to about 1,000 families.

2015 Nepal Earthquake

Over 7,000 people were killed and over 20,000 were left injured when a earthquake rocked the Nepal region in 2015. To help the survivors, Khalsa Aid initiated several projects including free food project, temporary shelters and rubble clearance among others.

2018 Kerala Floods

More than one million people were left homeless after Kerala witnessed its worst flooding in more than 90 years. Khalsa Aid volunteers reached in no time and they provided hot meals to about 15,000 people on daily basis, distributed essential materials like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, sanitary towels, mosquito nets, medical kits and clothes.
