Remembering original king of comedy – Jaspal Bhatti on his 6th death anniversary. Bhatti was the man behind hit comedy shows like ‘Ulta Pulta’ and ‘Flop Show’. He became popular due to his satirical shows during the golden days of Doordarshan. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Bhatti became the popular name in every household for his shows which are aimed to poke fun at the socio-political situations of the Indian society. People still remember him as a mind behind showcasing problems of the common man through his satire shows. He was died on October 25, 2012 in a road accident. He was on his way to Jalandhar from Bhatinda for the promotion of his Punjabi film, which was based on frequent power cuts in Punjab. Here are some of the interesting facts about Jaspal Bhatti: -
  • Born on March 3, 1955, in Amritsar, Bhatti graduated from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, as an electrical engineer.
  • He became popular in his college days for his street plays.
  • Before venturing into television, Bhatti was a cartoonist for The Tribune in Chandigarh.
  • He was the first turbaned Sikh comedian on Indian TV.
  • Bhatti married Savita Bhatti on 24 March 1985, and has a son, Jasraj Bhatti, and a daughter, Raabiya Bhatti.
  • 'Ulta Pulta' was his first comedy show which was aired on TV followed by 'Flop Show', 'Thank you Jijaji' and 'Dhaba Junction' among others. His show Flop Show is remembered even today. His wife Savita Bhatti produced the show and acted in all the episodes as his wife.
  • Bhatti’s satire on Punjab Police, 'Mahaul Theek Hai', in 1998 was his first directorial venture in Punjabi.
  • He also acted in many films, including Salman Khan starrer 'Janam Samjha Karo' and Aamir Khan starrer 'Fanaa'.
  • He had set up his own training school and a studio in Mohali.
  • He was  awarded Padma Bhushan posthumously on Republic Day 2013 for his contribution to Arts.
  • He was 57 when he died in a car accident which took place near Shahkot in Nakodar at 2.30 a.m.
