ਗੁਰਮੀਤ ਬਾਵਾ ਦੇਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਖਾਸ ਅੰਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਲੰਮੀ ਹੇਕ। ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਲੰਬੀ 'ਹੇਕ' ਨਾਲ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਗੀਤ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਅਤੇ 'ਹੋ' ਗਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਸਾਹ ਰੋਕਨਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਚੀਜ਼ ਚਮਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਧਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਤੱਥ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਕ ਸਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣੂ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪਤੀ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਾਵਾ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਖੁ਼ਦ ਇੱਕ ਗਾਇਕ ਸਨ। ਆਪਣੀ ਲੰਮੀ ਹੇਕ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰਮੀਤ ਬਾਵਾ ਨੇ 'ਲੰਮੀ ਹੇਕ ਦੀ ਮਲਿਕਾ' ਦਾ ਖਿਤਾਬ ਦਿਲਵਾਇਆ।

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਗਾਇਕੀ 'ਚ 45 ਸੈਕਿੰਡ ਦੀ ਹੇਕ ਲਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ। ਗੁਰਮੀਤ ਬਾਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੌਮਾਂਤਰੀ ਮਾਣ-ਸਨਮਾਨ ਮਿਲ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਸਨ। ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਮਿਊਜ਼ਿਕ ਇੰਡਸਟਰੀ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲੋਕ ਗੀਤਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਲੰਦੀਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਲੈ ਜਾਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਡਾ ਤੇ ਅਣਥੱਕ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਆਵਾਰਡਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਸਾਲ 1991 ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰਮੀਤ ਬਾਵਾ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸੂਬਾ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਨਾਟਕ ਅਕਾਦਮੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ, 2002 ਵਿੱਚ ਮੱਧ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਦੇਵੀ ਅਹਿਲਿਆ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ 2008 ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਗਾਇਕਾ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
