Tarak mehta ka oolta chashma, the longest running sitcom of Indian television is in news for wrong reasons. In one of the episodes of the show, character Roshan Singh Sodhi has been shown playing Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru of Sikhs which hasn’t gone down well within the Sikh community.
Calling the act unpardonable, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief Kirpal Singh said that no actor or character can impersonate or equate the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. However, through an official twitter handle, the makers of the show have tried to clarify their position saying that the character, Roshan Singh was not shown playing the the tenth Guru but was rather dressed up as Guru Gobind Singh Ji ka Khalsa and the same has been justified by the dialogues and his performance.
In an official statement Asit Kumarr Modi, the producer of the show said “Roshan Singh Sodhi was shown as Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Ka Khalsa, which has been justified through the dialogues & his performance. We have always believed in equality of all the religions & have never intended to hurt the sentiments of anyone. Our show consists of people from varied religions and cultures who worship each God and celebrate each and every festival with equal respect & happiness. We are aware & respect that in Sikh religion nobody can show or portray themselves as Guru Gobind Singh Ji. We request our viewers not to misinterpret it any other context,”.
