While we all know that Punjab has been dealing with the issue of farmer’s suicide since ages now, Kiranjit Kaur of Mansa has stood up to bring a change in the society. Two years ago she set up the ‘Kisan Mazdoor Khudkushi Peedit Parivar Committee’. The organization was set up to support the families of suicide victims, bringing together the families of farmers who killed themselves because of the crippling debt. Kiranjit is 23 years old, but she took this initiative to help other people in the Punjab region. In April 2016, Kiranjit lost her father, Gurnam Singh, to the same reason. The family had no news of Gurnam suffering of the debt. publive-image Her father had taken a loan of Rs. 800,000, and his crops had failed. He was so devastated and couldn’t repay the amount, so he took this step. While his decision made the family plunge into depression, Kiranjit started stitching to get an income for her family, and this led her to build the organization. However, now the organization has become the support system of more than 4500 families in Punjab. The 23 years old, postgraduate student of political science has grown with confidence to raise the awareness about this issue. Kiranjit has made a family with her organization as the families also take her as one of their own. Kudos to you girl!
