Imran Khan apologises to Bombay High court over participation in Mumbai protest
Bollywood actor Imran Khan apologises to the Bombay High Court for joining a Mumbai protest. The court extends relief until December 7 as the FRRO reviews his case.
The Bombay High Court on Monday criticised Bollywood actor Imran Khan for taking part in a protest in Mumbai over the CEC-SIR issue. The court pointed out that the right to protest is a fundamental right available to Indian citizens. Imran Khan, who is a US citizen, was questioned for participating in a political protest in India.
Following the court's remarks, the actor offered an unconditional apology and agreed not to take part in such protests again.
Government Asked Actor to Leave IndiaImran Khan, 43, was asked by the government to leave India by October 28. He was accused of joining a protest against the country's election chief last month. The government considered his participation a violation of immigration and visa rules.
However, the Bombay High Court had temporarily stopped the government order last week. On Monday, the court extended this protection until December 7.
Court Seeks Written Promise from ActorDuring the hearing, the court said that Imran Khan had no right to participate in political protests as he was a foreign national of Indian origin. It also observed that he was not directly affected by the revision of voter lists.
The court asked him to submit an unconditional apology and give a written promise that he would not participate in such protests in the future. His lawyer agreed to provide the undertaking immediately. He also promised that the actor would not encourage or motivate others to join such protests.
Final Decision Still PendingThe court has extended the suspension of the government order until the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) takes a final decision. The agency will first hear Imran Khan's side before deciding the matter.
Under Indian law, foreign nationals participating in political protests may face action for violating visa and immigration rules.
Imran Khan is the nephew of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and comes from a well-known film family. He made his acting debut in Bollywood in 2008 and appeared in several successful films until 2015. He later stepped away from the film industry.
