Ever since Adipurush disappointed audiences despite massive expectations, every mythological film has been viewed with caution. Then came Kalki 2898 AD, which proved that Indian cinema can blend mythology with grand storytelling when handled with conviction. Now, all eyes are on Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita Mata and Ravie Dubey and Lord Laxman.
The recently held Pratham Sankalp event in New Delhi on July 18 did not feel like a regular trailer launch. Instead of loud marketing and flashy performances, it looked like a cultural celebration that respected one of India's most cherished epics. And honestly, that was perhaps the biggest takeaway from the evening.
Ranbir Kapoor's Gestures Spoke Louder Than WordsSometimes, actions create a stronger impression than speeches. Ranbir Kapoor repeatedly touching the feet of Arun Govil and Sunny Deol instantly became the most talked-about moments of the event.
His heartfelt words for Arun Govil, who played Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar's iconic television series and now portrays King Dashrath, reflected humility rather than confidence. Ranbir even apologised to the audience for wearing sunglasses, explaining that he had caught an eye infection from his daughter Raha. It was a small moment, but it made the event feel genuine and respectful.
Whether planned or spontaneous, these gestures helped build trust. After the backlash faced by Adipurush over its portrayal of mythology, audiences seem to appreciate this respectful approach.
Can Ramayana Avoid Adipurush's Mistakes?The biggest question remains the same. Can Ramayana deliver where Adipurush failed?
On paper, it certainly looks promising. Director Nitesh Tiwari has earned a reputation for emotionally driven storytelling, while producer Namit Malhotra has assembled one of the biggest productions Indian cinema has ever seen. With a reported budget of around ₹4,000 crore, cutting-edge VFX by DNEG, music by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman, and an ensemble cast including Sai Pallavi, Yash, Sunny Deol, Ravi Dubey and Arun Govil, the scale is undeniably massive.
But audiences today know that money alone cannot guarantee success. Respect for the source material and emotional storytelling matter far more.
Will It Be a Blockbuster?Predicting a blockbuster before a film releases is always risky. The official trailer will arrive on July 24 after its preview at San Diego Comic-Con, and that will offer a clearer picture.
However, based on what was presented at the Pratham Sankalp event, Ramayana appears to understand what viewers truly expect. Instead of selling spectacle alone, the makers are trying to present Lord Rama as "Maryada Purushottam" a symbol of duty, sacrifice and righteousness.
If the film maintains this sincerity while delivering world-class visuals and strong performances, it has every chance of becoming not just another box-office success but a landmark film for Indian cinema.
