Veteran singer Alka Yagnik's appearance at the Padma Awards 2026 ceremony in New Delhi drew widespread attention, not only for receiving one of the country's highest honours but also because fans were concerned about her health. The celebrated playback singer was awarded the Padma Bhushan by President Droupadi Murmu on June 23 in recognition of her immense contribution to Indian music.

Videos from the ceremony quickly went viral on social media. Many viewers noticed that Alka appeared weak and was assisted while walking to receive the award. The clips sparked concern among fans, who began questioning her well-being and wishing her a speedy recovery.

Addressing these concerns, Alka shared a heartfelt post on Instagram and opened up about her health journey. She wrote, “For the last two years, I have stayed away from the spotlight, from public appearances, and from sharing much of my journey. Many of you knew I am going through difficult health and through it all, your love, prayers, messages, and unwavering support have stayed with me every step of the way.”

Reflecting on receiving the Padma Bhushan, she added, “Today, as I stepped out to receive one of highest civilian honours in the country - the distinguished Padma Bhushan, I did so with a heart full of gratitude. This honour is deeply humbling, and while my name may be on it, it belongs just as much to every listener who welcomed my voice into their lives, carried my songs through generations, and stood by me through both the highs and the challenges.”

The singer also spoke about her recovery, saying, “This moment feels especially meaningful because it marks not just a recognition of my work, but a reminder of the strength that comes from love, hope, and resilience. I am slowly finding my way back, and I wanted to be here today - not only for myself, but for each and every one of you who have been a part of this journey.”

Alka concluded by saying that she did not just accept an award but also “felt the love of millions who have been a part of my journey”.

Alka Yagnik is regarded as one of the most successful and influential playback singers in Indian cinema. With a career spanning more than four decades, she has lent her voice to thousands of songs across Hindi and regional films. Known for iconic hits such as Ek Do Teen, Tip Tip Barsa Pani, Taal Se Taal Mila, and Agar Tum Saath Ho, she has worked with leading music composers and singers in the industry. Her contribution to Indian music has earned her several prestigious honours, including multiple Filmfare Awards and the Padma Bhushan. Her most recent playback song was Naram Kaalja from Amar Singh Chamkila (2024), composed by A.R. Rahman.
