Shaheed Udham Singh: Childhood of Struggles

Udham Singh was born on 26 December 1899 in Sunam, Punjab. His birth name was Sher Singh. He lost both his parents when he was very young and spent his childhood in an orphanage in Amritsar. Life was full of hardships, but these challenges made him strong and determined. Even as a young boy, he believed in serving his country and dreamed of seeing India free from British rule.

Incident That Changed His Life

The biggest turning point in Udham Singh's life came on 13 April 1919, during the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in Amritsar. Thousands of innocent Indians had gathered peacefully when British troops opened fire without warning. Hundreds of people lost their lives, and many more were injured.

The heartbreaking scene left a deep mark on Udham Singh's mind. He could never forget the cries of innocent people. From that day, he decided that those responsible for the massacre should one day face justice. This promise became the purpose of his life.

Mission of Patience and Courage

Udham Singh did not act in anger or haste. Instead, he waited patiently for more than 20 years, planning every step carefully. He travelled to different countries while staying committed to his mission.

On 13 March 1940, at Caxton Hall in London, he shot Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, who had supported the policies behind the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Udham Singh believed he was delivering justice for the countless innocent lives lost in 1919.

After the incident, he did not try to escape. He accepted responsibility for his actions without fear, showing the courage and conviction that made him one of India's greatest revolutionaries.

Ultimate Sacrifice

Udham Singh was arrested and put on trial in Britain. During the court proceedings, he spoke fearlessly about the suffering of Indians under British rule. He never asked for mercy because he believed he had fulfilled his duty towards his country.

On 31 July 1940, he was hanged at Pentonville Prison in London. At just 40 years of age, he gave his life for the honour of India. His sacrifice made him immortal in the hearts of millions.
