DHANI RAM CHATRIK, THE GREATEST POET OF PUNJAB

Considered one of the pioneers of Punjabi literature and credited for promoting Punjabi culture and Punjabi language throughout his life, Dhani Ram Chtrik has been termed Punjab’s greatest lyricist and poet.

Known for poems like ‘Mele vich jatt, Punjab, Hauka, Ardas, Kora kadar’, he was the first person to regulate the typeset for Gurmukhi script, publish Guru Granth Sahib and Bhai Kahn Singh’s Mahan Kosh, the first Punjabi dictionary by using modern technique at his Sudarshan Printing Press.

ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦਹਿਲੀਜ਼ ਦੇ ਸੀਪ ਗਈਆਂ,

ਜੇੜੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨੇ ਕੁੱਠੀਆਂ ਨੇ |

ਜੋਬਨ ਰੂਪ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਮਣਸ ਦਿੱਤਾ,

ਧੌਣ ਸੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਫੇਰ ਨਾ ਉੱਠੀਆਂ ਨੇ |

ਤਕਵਾ ਮਿਹਰ ਦਾ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਠਿਲ ਪਈਆਂ,

ਠਾਠਾਂ ਵੇਖ ਨਾ ਪਰਤੀਆਂ ਪੁੱਠੀਆਂ ਨੇ |

ਬੇਲੇ ਚੀਰ,ਲਿਤਾੜ ਲਏ, ਸ਼ੇਰ ਸੁੱਤੇ,

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਲੋਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਹੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੁੱਠੀਆਂ ਨੇ |

ਆਪ ਗੱਲ ਕੇ ਬੀਜ ਦਾ ਰੁੱਖ ਬਣਦਾ,

ਨੀਵੇਂ ਹੋਇ, ਉੱਚੀ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾਈ ਦੀ ਏ |

ਪੈਰੀਂ ਡਿੱਗ ਕੇ ਵੇਲ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਸਿਖਰ ਜਾਏ,

ਕਰਾਮਾਤ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਨਰਮਾਈ ਦੀ ਏ |

Being a highly creative writer he experimented with different Punjabi genres. Having vast expertise in Punjabi vocabulary, his experiments with metaphor, tone and style varied.

One can envision his immense talent from his following lines depicting peasantry written in narrative style:

Toorhi tand saamb haarhi vech watt ke

Lambrhaan ‘te shaahaan da hisaab katt ke

Kachhe maar vanjhli anand chhaa gya

Maarda damaame jatt mele aa gya
