Shakti Sharma creates history in Indian Air Force; becomes First Woman non-medical Air Vice Marshal

The Indian Air Force has marked a historic moment with Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma becoming the first woman officer from the non-medical branch of the Indian Defence Services to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal, or equivalent. She achieved the milestone on September 1, 2026, opening a new chapter in the journey of women in the Indian Armed Forces.

Following her promotion, Sharma assumed the important appointment of Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Education) at Air Headquarters. She was previously serving in the rank of Air Commodore.

Over 3 Decades Of Distinguished Service

Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma was commissioned into the Education Branch of the Indian Air Force on June 18, 1994. Over more than three decades, she has served in several important positions across training establishments, field stations, command headquarters and Air Headquarters.

Her career has also been marked by several firsts. She became the first woman Group Captain in the IAF outside the medical branch. Her long experience in military education and training has played an important role in shaping her career and preparing her for senior leadership responsibilities.

First Woman From The Armed Forces To Lead A Sainik School

Shakti Sharma had already made history before reaching the rank of Air Vice Marshal. She became the first woman officer from the three services of the Indian Armed Forces to command a Sainik School.

She served as the Principal of Sainik School Kapurthala, where she worked with students and encouraged them to explore opportunities in the armed forces. Her role highlighted the growing participation of women in areas connected with military education and leadership.

Strengthening Education And Academic Partnerships

Air Vice Marshal Sharma has also contributed to strengthening links between the armed forces and leading educational institutions. She played an important role in establishing IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University. These initiatives helped promote academic and institutional cooperation while creating greater opportunities for interaction between defence institutions and the education sector.
