Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor, and writer K. Bhagyaraj passed away on Saturday in Chennai after suffering a heart attack. He was 73. According to reports, he was taken unconscious to Apollo Hospitals, where doctors declared him dead.

Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor, and writer K. Bhagyaraj passed away on Saturday in Chennai after suffering a heart attack. He was 73. According to reports, he was taken unconscious to Apollo Hospitals, where doctors declared him dead.
Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, former actress Poornima Bhagyaraj, his son and actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, and his daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj.
Who is K Bhagyaraj?
Born as Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj on January 7, 1953, near Gobichettipalayam in Tamil Nadu's Erode district, he began his career in the film industry as an assistant to renowned director Bharathiraja. He also appeared briefly as a junior artist in the classic film 16 Vayathinile (1977). Later, he worked as a dialogue writer and assistant director before making his directorial debut with Suvarilladha Chiththirangal in 1979.
Over a career spanning nearly five decades, Bhagyaraj became one of Tamil cinema's most respected storytellers. Known for his simple yet engaging scripts, witty dialogues, and relatable middle-class characters, he directed more than 20 films and acted in over 75 movies.
Some of his most popular films include Andha 7 Naatkal, Mundhanai Mudichu, Chinna Veedu, Dhavani Kanavugal, and Enga Chinna Rasa. Many of his successful Tamil films were later remade in Telugu and Hindi. He also directed the Hindi film Aakhree Raasta (1986), starring Amitabh Bachchan.
Bhagyaraj remained active in cinema as an actor, with his latest appearance in Dhanush's Kuberaa (2025). Earlier this year, while celebrating 50 years in the film industry, he announced plans to direct a new feature film and a web series. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian cinema, leaving behind a rich legacy of memorable films and storytelling.
