Akshay Kumar, who was recently trolled for endorsing a pan masala brand 'Vimal', stepped down as the tobacco brand ambassador after facing backlash from his fans.
Akshay Kumar issued a statement on social media at midnight on Thursday, April 21 and apologised to his fans.
'Mr. Khiladi' was the latest Bollywood star to join the pan masala brand promos after Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn. The same brand also sells tobacco products.
After facing backlash on social media for his decision to endorse Vimal ads, Akshay Kumar apologised to his fans with a note on Instagram.
Likewise, he announced that he has stepped back as the ambassador of the brand.
"I am sorry. I would like to apologise to you, all my fans and well-wishers. Your reaction over the past few days has deeply affected me. While I have not and will not endorse tobacco, I respect the outpouring of your feelings in light of my association with Vimal Elaichi," he wrote in a note on Instagram.
"With all humility, I step back. I have decided to contribute the entire endorsement fee towards a worthy cause. The brand might continue airing the ads till the legal duration of the contract that is binding upon me, but I promise to be extremely mindful in making my future choices. In return I shall forever continue to ask for your love and wishes," he added.
