7 simple tips to protect your indoor and outdoor plants during Monsoon
The monsoon in India is about to arrive. While the cool weather and fresh rain bring relief from the summer heat, they also create new challenges for your home, health, and plants. Too much rain, strong winds, and high humidity can harm both indoor and outdoor plants if they are not cared for properly. Here are seven easy tips to keep your plants healthy during the rainy season.
Tips to protect your plants during monsoon season
1. Make Sure Water Drains Properly
Too much water can damage plant roots. Check that your pots have drainage holes so extra water can flow out easily. Avoid letting water collect in trays under the pots.
2. Protect Plants from Heavy Rain
Not all plants can handle heavy rainfall. Move potted plants to a covered area like a balcony or porch when it rains heavily. For garden plants, use a simple shade net or cover if needed.
3. Trim Dead Leaves and Branches
Remove dry, yellow, or damaged leaves regularly. This helps improve air circulation and reduces the chances of fungal diseases during the humid weather.
4. Keep an Eye Out for Pests
The rainy season often brings insects like snails, slugs, and aphids. Check your plants every few days and remove pests by hand or use safe, natural pest-control methods.

5. Avoid Overwatering Indoor Plants
Even if it is raining outside, indoor plants do not need extra water. The soil stays moist for longer during the monsoon, so water only when the top layer of soil feels dry.
6. Add Organic Compost Carefully
A small amount of organic compost can provide nutrients and keep plants healthy. However, avoid adding too much fertilizer during the rainy season, as excessive moisture can reduce its effectiveness.

7. Give Plants Enough Fresh Air and Light
Indoor plants should receive enough natural light and ventilation. Open windows when possible and place plants where they can get indirect sunlight. Outdoor plants should not be crowded, as proper spacing improves airflow.
