Meet Punjab's Harjinder Kaur who won bronze medal in weightlifting at Commonwealth Games 2022

Who is weightlifter Harjinder Kaur? The 25-year-old weightlifter from Punjab's Nabha district has made the whole nation proud after winning the bronze medal in the 71 kg category of weightlifting at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.

Harjinder Kaur lifted a total lift of 212 kg (93 kg in Snatch round and 119 kg in Clean and Jerk round) to bag the bronze medal. India's weightlifting contingent has a major contribution to India's medal tally at Commonwealth Games 2022 which are being held in Birmingham.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and wrote: "Our weightlifting contingent has performed exceptionally well at the Birmingham CWG. Continuing this, Harjinder Kaur wins a Bronze medal. Congratulations to her for this special accomplishment. Best wishes to her for her future endeavours."

Who is weightlifter Harjinder Kaur? 

Harjinder Kaur, who was born in Mehas village near Nabha, Punjab, is the youngest child of Sahib Singh and Kuldeep Kaur. She would play kabaddi at Nabha's Government Girls School. Son after she got enrolled in a college at Anandpur Sahib, her coach Surinder Singh assigned her to the college Kabaddi team.

Later, Harjinder Kaur joined the sports wing at Patiala's Punjabi University. Notably, coach Paramjeet Sharma saw her talent when Harjinder Kaur showed her potential in a tug-of-war.

She was indeed made for weightlifting courtesy of her muscular arms which, she claims, came from cutting feed. She used to spend hours on the 'toka', a chaff cutting machine.  You need to turn a massive wheel with blades while using 'toka'.

PTC Network salutes the courage and passion of Harjinder Kaur. Not only Punjab but the whole nation is proud of her as she has brought a bronze medal in weightlifting at Commonwealth Games.
