Who is Jigna Vora?

Jigna Vohra is a journalist who made headlines in 2011 when she was arrested in connection with the murder of Mumbai-based crime reporter Jyotirmoy Dey. The case sent shockwaves through the Indian media industry, which was already struggling to deal with the increasing violence against journalists in the country.

Jigna Vora accused of Jyotirmoy Dey's murder

Jigna Vora, who was a senior journalist with The Asian Age at the time, was accused of providing information about Dey's movements to Chhota Rajan, a notorious gangster, who allegedly ordered the killing. The police claimed that Vohra was in touch with Rajan's aides and was paid a sum of Rs 2 lakh for the information she provided.

The case dragged on for several years, during which Vohra spent over a year in jail before being released on bail in 2012. In 2018, after a long and protracted legal battle, Vora was finally acquitted of all charges by the Mumbai Sessions Court. The court held that there was no direct or circumstantial evidence linking Vora to the murder and that the prosecution's case was based primarily on conjecture and speculation.

In her book, Vora discusses in-depth the accusations made against her and how the gangster Chhota Rajan was linked to her by dubious evidence discovered by police. Despite Vora's strong denials of the accusations and her explanation that she had just approached the mobster for an interview, the charges against her indicated the contrary. She was released on bond in 2012, but her innocence was only fully established seven years later, according to her book, which was published in 2019.
