Neeru Bajwa Birthday Special: Pollywood queen's journey from Dev Anand's film to Global charts

Neeru Bajwa turns 46 on August 26, and honestly, age seems to be just a number when it comes to the Punjabi cinema powerhouse. From being a young actress who began her career with Dev Anand's Main Solah Baras Ki to becoming one of the most successful actresses, producers and filmmakers in Pollywood, Neeru has built a career that refuses to slow down.

Reason Behind the 'Pollywood Queen' Tag

The title 'Pollywood Queen' is not simply a glamorous nickname. Neeru has earned it through consistency, versatility and an ability to remain relevant across generations. Her breakthrough came with films such as Jihne Mera Dil Luteya and the blockbuster Jatt & Juliet, where her pairing with Diljit Dosanjh became one of Punjabi cinema's most loved combinations. Jatt & Juliet went on to become a major box-office success and won several PTC Punjabi Film Awards, including Best Actress for Neeru.

She followed it with Jatt & Juliet 2, Sardaar Ji, Laung Laachi, Shadaa and Jatt & Juliet 3, proving that she could comfortably move between romance, comedy, drama and larger commercial entertainers.

When Entertainment Became About Stories Too

What makes Neeru's journey particularly interesting is that she did not remain restricted to the conventional leading-lady image. Films such as Channo Kamli Yaar Di gave her the opportunity to explore emotionally demanding characters, while Kali Jotta showed her willingness to be part of cinema that addresses difficult social realities.

Her role in Kali Jotta was particularly significant. The film dealt with mental health, trauma and the experiences of women in a deeply emotional manner, placing Neeru at the centre of a story that went far beyond conventional commercial Punjabi cinema.

Shayar, meanwhile, brought her together with celebrated singer-actor Satinder Sartaaj and presented a more mature romantic story. Her performance was recognised with the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2025 Punjabi Filmfare Awards.

From Actress to Producer and Director

Neeru has also demonstrated that her ambitions go beyond acting. She stepped into production and later made her directorial debut with Sargi. Her production journey has allowed her to have a greater say in the kind of stories reaching Punjabi audiences.

Neeru has spoken openly about people questioning her about having three girls. On one occasion, she recalled being asked about having no son, highlighting how deeply the preference for boys still exists in society.

Instead of allowing such comments to define her, Neeru has embraced her daughters wholeheartedly, describing them as her crown. Her response has been simple but powerful she has never treated motherhood as something that should limit her identity.

In a 2026 interview, she explained that motherhood taught her to say "no" and stop trying to please everyone. She has also spoken about protecting her daughters from unrealistic societal expectations.

And perhaps that is one of the most inspiring parts of her story: she became a mother of three, continued working, produced films, took on challenging roles and kept building her career without apologising for any part of her life.

Trophy Cabinet That Speaks for Itself

Neeru's achievements further explain her position in Punjabi cinema. She is a three-time PTC Punjabi Film Award winner, with major recognition for her performances, including Jihne Mera Dil Luteya and the Jatt & Juliet films. She has also received Filmfare recognition, including the Critics' Award for Channo Kamli Yaar Di and the Best Actress honour for Shayar.

Her collaborations with stars such as Diljit Dosanjh, Gippy Grewal, Amrinder Gill, Jimmy Sheirgill and Satinder Sartaaj have further strengthened her place in Punjabi entertainment.

Her Story Is Still Being Written

Neeru has also stepped beyond Punjabi cinema, appearing in the Hindi film Tehran and the internationally released supernatural thriller It Lives Inside, expanding her presence beyond Pollywood.

Her International Film: A Step Beyond Pollywood

Neeru's international journey deserves special mention. In 2023, she appeared in Bishal Dutta's English-language supernatural horror film It Lives Inside, starring alongside Megan Suri, Mohana Krishnan, Betty Gabriel and Vik Sahay.

The film premiered at the prestigious South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in 2023 before receiving a theatrical release in the United States and Canada through Neon.

Neeru played Poorna, the mother of Megan Suri's character Samidha. The film used Indian mythology and the immigrant experience as important parts of its story, exploring questions of cultural identity and the relationship between Indian heritage and life in North America.

For Neeru, the film was significant because it placed a familiar Punjabi face in an international English-language production and introduced her to audiences beyond Indian regional cinema.

Neeru Bajwa is therefore not simply celebrating another birthday. She is celebrating longevity. She has remained an actress, producer, director, performer and, most importantly, a woman who has refused to let age, motherhood or society's expectations decide what she can achieve.
