Born Satinder Pal Singh Saini, he has built a remarkable identity as a Punjabi Sufi singer, songwriter, poet, composer, actor and scholar. His journey is special because he never had to leave his roots behind to become a global artist.
Satinder Sartaaj's Legacy
Interestingly, the name “Sartaaj” itself has a poetic story. During his hostel days, he once woke up at around 3 a.m. and began writing a song. One of its lines was “tere sir tareya da taaj ve.” The beautiful thought inspired him to choose “Sartaaj” as his poetic pen name. Years later, that name would become recognised by Punjabi music lovers across the world.
Music Backed by Education
One of the most interesting things about Sartaaj's journey is his strong academic background. Unlike artists who enter music mainly through commercial performance, he studied music as a serious discipline. He completed advanced studies at Panjab University, including an M.Phil. and Ph.D. related to Sufi music, and also studied Persian to develop a deeper understanding of classical poetry and Sufi literature.
Before becoming a full-time international performer, he worked as a music professor. This combination of scholarship and performance helped shape the kind of artist he eventually became. His songs are not simply written to entertain; many are built around poetic ideas, traditional imagery and philosophical thoughts.

Sartaaj created a distinctive musical style by bringing together Punjabi folk, classical music and Sufi poetry. His lyrics often use Punjabi alongside Urdu and Persian vocabulary, giving his songs a literary quality.
His popular songs, including “Sai” and “Udaarian,” helped establish him among Punjabi music lovers. Interestingly, the look reportedly developed naturally in 2003, when Sartaaj was still a student. While working on a project connected with filmmaker and television personality Mukesh Gautam, he experimented with his appearance at Dara Studio in Mohali. A black curtain was used in creating his turban style, an unexpected moment that eventually contributed to the look audiences now associate with him.

A major turning point came in 2008, when Sartaaj was invited to perform in Toronto after organisers discovered his singing online. The performance opened an important international chapter in his career and helped him connect with Punjabi audiences outside India.
His global journey continued with major performances. On 2 May 2014, he performed at London's historic Royal Albert Hall to a sold-out audience, marking a significant milestone for Punjabi music on an international stage.
From Music to Cinema
Sartaaj has also successfully explored acting. In 2017, he made his international film debut as Maharaja Duleep Singh in The Black Prince. The historical film brought his artistic work to an audience beyond Punjabi music. He later appeared in Punjabi films including Ikko Mikke and Kali Jotta.
His career has also included collaborations with international musicians and humanitarian initiatives, including work connected with efforts against human trafficking.
Creating History in Melbourne
Sartaaj's international popularity continued to grow in 2026. During his Heritage Tour, he performed at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena on May 16 and May 17. The venue itself described the addition of a second show as a testament to his growing popularity in Australia. The two Melbourne concerts added another important chapter to a career that has taken Punjabi poetry from university classrooms and intimate musical gatherings to some of the world's biggest stages.
