Her final moments were at a private hospital in Nelamangala, Karnataka, where she had been admitted due to severe respiratory issues. The news of Leelavati's passing has cast a pall of sadness over the South film industry, prompting an outpouring of grief from both celebrities and fans on social media. Prime Minister Modi also conveyed his condolences on Leelavati's demise.

In a Twitter post, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over Leelavati's death. He wrote, "I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of the illustrious Kannada film personality, Leelavathi Ji. A true icon of cinema, she graced the silver screen with her versatile performances in numerous films. Her diverse roles and exceptional talent will always be remembered and revered. My heartfelt condolences to her family and fans. May she rest in peace."
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also expressed condolences for the passing of Leelavathi. Sharing his sorrow over the demise of the seasoned actress on Twitter, he wrote, "The news of the demise of the experienced Kannada actress Leelavathi is deeply saddening. Just last week, upon learning about her illness, I visited her home, inquired about her health, and had a conversation with her son Vinod Raj. I remain hopeful that Leelavathi, who has delighted audiences with her captivating performances for many decades, will recover and continue to be with us for an extended period. My prayers for the departed soul to find peace, and for her family to find the strength to endure this grief."
Leelavati's prolific career spanned over 600 films, encompassing both theater and cinema. She showcased her talent in languages such as Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu. Collaborating with renowned actor Dr. Rajkumar in several films, Leelavathi resided in Nelamangala with her actor son Vinod Raj in recent years. It is noteworthy that Leelavathi earned acclaim for her exceptional performances in films like Bhakta Kumbara, Sant Tukaram, Bhakta Prahlada, Mangalya Yoga, and Man-Mechchida Madadi.
