The IC 814 web series, which dramatizes the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 814 by the Pakistani terrorist group Harakat-ul-Mujahideen, has sparked considerable controversy. The series is criticised for referring to two hijackers by Hindu code names, namely Bhola and Shankar, rather than explicitly identifying all five hijackers as Muslim terrorists. Critics argue that this portrayal misrepresents the facts and has incited a significant backlash on social media, with calls for a ban on the series.

The controversy centres around the series' use of pseudonyms for the hijackers. Names such as Chief, Doctor, Burger, Bhola, and Shankar were assigned to the hijackers, but the use of Hindu names for two of them has been particularly contentious. Critics have accused director Anubhav Sinha of failing to accurately represent the hijackers' identities, suggesting that the show should have clearly identified them as Muslim extremists.
