Paris Olympics 2024: Kangana Ranaut Speaks Out Against Angela Carini's Defeat to Imane Khelif in Boxing
Bollywood actress and politician Kangana Ranaut recently voiced her disapproval of the boxing match between Italy's Angela Carini and Algeria's Imane Khelif, labelling the result as unfair. Ranaut's comments come in the wake of a heated debate surrounding Khelif's participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics, following her disqualification from the 2023 World Championships over a gender eligibility test.
In an Instagram post, Ranaut expressed her concerns by sharing a photo of a tearful Angela Carini in the ring. She criticized the match's outcome, stating, “This girl had to fight a 7 feet tall naturally born male, who has all body parts like a natural male. He beat her in the boxing ring like a male beats a female in a physical abuse scenario. But he claims to identify as female, so guess who won the women’s boxing match? Woke culture is the most unfair and unjust practice. Speak up before it is your baby girl whose job or medal is taken away. #SaveWomenSports.”
Ranaut's remarks extended beyond the boxing ring, addressing societal norms within homosexual relationships. She suggested that one partner often assumes traditional gender roles while the other plays the opposite role, adding, “They love to play stereotypical male and female archetypes but simultaneously encourage regular women to be effeminate in the name of feminism. Hmmm… strange! I love homosexuals, some of my closest friends are homosexuals and they are extremely talented and brilliant. They don’t have to imitate anyone for acceptance.”
The controversy surrounding women's sports eligibility reignited on August 1, 2024, when Khelif faced Carini in her first match of the Paris Olympics. Khelif won after Carini withdrew from the bout after just 46 seconds. Despite the victory, Khelif has faced significant backlash.
In response, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit issued a joint statement reaffirming their support for Khelif. The statement emphasized that all athletes competing in the Olympic boxing tournament adhere to the event's regulations, asserting, “Every person has the right to practice sport without discrimination. All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the competition’s eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations set by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU).”
