The film makers of Alia Bhatt's Gangubai Kathiawadi have decided to forgo the release of the film.

The film was scheduled to be released on January 6, 2022, the same day as SS Rajamouli's RRR. However, Rajamouli and the RRR producers have asked Pen Studios and Sanjay Leela Bhansali to postpone the release of their film.

Gangubai Kathiawadi was previously scheduled to hit theatres on January 6, 2019. The makers of Gangubai Kathiawadi released a statement on Monday announcing the new release date: "We are pleased to inform you that Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi has been rescheduled for a new release date.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada are in charge of the production (Pen Studios). On February 18, 2022, the film will be released." Alia Bhatt posted the statement to her Instagram.

The movie also marks first ever collaboration of Alia and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Surprisingly, it was the film's director, SS Rajamouli, who disclosed the reason for the film’s delay. Rajamouli expressed gratitude to director Sanjay Leela Bhansali for postponing the film's release at his request in a tweet.

On January 7, 2022, 'RRR,' which stars Alia, was set to clash with 'Gangubai.' However, because Sanjay Leela Bhansali has agreed to move his release date, the films will not be forced to compete for the box office collections.

The decision by Mr. @JayantilalGada and Mr. #SanjayLeelaBhansali to move the release date is well appreciated. Our heartfelt wishes to #GangubaiKathiawadi..:)
