Dalbir Singh, who played the role of Ravan in Amritsar Ramleela, died in a train tragedy held during the Dussehra celebrations in the city on October 19. Besides Dalbir, the incident had left over 60 people dead and 70 others injured when a speeding train ran over the crowd gathered to watch the burning of a Ravana effigy in Amritsar.

The train was coming from Jalandhar to Amritsar when the incident occurred at Joda Phatak where at least 300 people were watching ‘Ravana Dahan’ at a ground near the tracks. People standing on the tracks did not realise that the Jalandhar-Amritsar DMU passenger train, coming to Amritsar from Hoshiarpur, was approaching fast due to the noise of the firecrackers during the burning effigy.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Police has launched an investigation into the Dussehra tragedy. The role of train driver, railway officials and local authorities, who gave permission for holding of the event close to the railway tracks, is being probed, police officials said.

Navjot Kaur Sidhu was the chief guest at the Dussehra festival function where the tragedy took place.
