Amritsar Train Accident: ‘Ravana’ Dalbir Singh Lost His Life While Saving Others. Here’s All You Need To Know

Local actor Dalbir Singh, who played the role of Ravana at another Ramleela in the city, were among the 60 people who were killed during the horrifying incident held at Joda Phatak area in Amritsar on October 19.

The incident happened when a speeding Jalandhar-Amritsar DMU train ran over the crowd gathered to watch the burning of a Ravana effigy. According to the reports, 300 people were watching ‘Ravana Dahan’ at a ground near the tracks.

According to Times of India report, Dalbir was invited to the event as he was to be felicitated by the Ramleela organising body as he was a regular participant. Reportedly, Dalbir was a kite maker and he was playing Ravana for the last 15 years.

According to media reports, Dalbir saw the train coming and tried saving people from the full-speeding train. During his effort, he dragged around seven to eight people from coming under the train and accidentally his foot got stuck there and the train ran over him.

Dalbir is survived by his wife and an eight-month-old baby.

Meanwhile, Dalbir’s mother has urged the state government to provide a job to his wife.

The Punjab Police has launched an investigation into the Dussehra tragedy. The role of train driver, railway officials and local authorities, who gave permission for holding of the event close to the railway tracks, is being probed, police officials said.
