Meet Bhai Gurmej Singh: He Took 12 Years To Transliterate Guru Granth Sahib Ji For Blind

Bhai Gurmej Singh Ji needs no introduction. He is credited with transliteration holy book ‘Guru Granth Sahib Ji’ for the visually impaired people. 80-year-old Bhai Gurmej Singh Ji of Amritsar, who himself is blind, took 12 years to accomplish the task.

According to a report in Times Of India, Bhai Gurmej Singh Ji lost his vision after suffering from small pox when he was just eight-year-old. After taking retirement from his job, Bhai Gurmej Singh Ji started working on transliteration of the holy book into Braille language in the year 2000.

“It is the Guru’s meher (grace) that guides my hand. I was fortunate to be trained as a kirtankar and raagi, and to learn Braille, as a child,” Bhai Gurmej Singh Ji said.

The Braille version of ‘Guru Granth Sahib Ji’ was produced in 18 volumes. The transcribed version is available in Central Library in Amritsar.

Post transliterate ‘Guru Granth Sahib Ji’, Bhai Gurmej Singh Ji has also transliterated Sukhmani Sahab.

For his remarkable achievement, Bhai Gurmej Singh Ji, who is also Huzoori Ragi at Sri Harmandir Sahib, honoured with Sikh Achievers’ Awards in 2018.
