SURJIT HOCKEY TOURNAMENT TO COMMENCE FROM 23RD OCTOBER
India’s famous Indian oil Surjit Hockey Tournament will commence from 23rd October at Burlton Park in Jalandhar.
The tournament is played every year in memory of Olympian Surjit Singh and is conducted by Surjit Hockey Society Jalandhar Chairperson, Varinder kumar Sharma. This is to be noted that Olympian Surjit Singh was killed in a road accident near Jalandhar on 7th January 1984. Credited for raising the standard of Indian Hockey, Surjit Singh was once hailed as king of Penalty Corner and he fought for the betterment of the game till his last breath.
Asia’s biggest and leading oil company Indian Oil will sponsor the tournament. Indian Oil has been sponsoring this tournament for the past 27 years.
The tournament will be played for straight nine days from 23rd October till 31st October. Played on league Knock out system, Punjab National Bank Delhi were the winners in Men’s category last year whereas Punjab eleven were the winners in women category.
Giving further details Mr. Sharma told the media persons that 12 teams will be divided in 4 pools and the winner from the individual pools will reach the semi-finals. In women’s category, the winner and the first runner up will enter the semi-finals.
The semi-finals in women category will be played on 27th and 28th October whereas in Men’s category it will be played on 30th October. The finals will be played on 29th and 31st October in women and men category respectively.
Mr. Sharma said that the purpose of the tournament is to raise the National game among the masses. All the amenities right from their stay, medical support, transportation have been taken care of.
