Ajay's performance presented Bhagat Singh as a determined revolutionary who was deeply committed to India's independence. The film also explored his political thoughts and his willingness to sacrifice his life for the country.

The performance became one of the most acclaimed roles of Ajay's career. His portrayal also earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, making it one of the most recognised performances of a historical figure in Hindi cinema.

Bobby Deol as Bhagat Singh in 23rd March 1931: Shaheed

Bhagat Singh's story was brought to the screen again in the same year through 23rd March 1931: Shaheed, directed by Guddu Dhanoa. This time, Bobby Deol played the revolutionary.

The film focused on Bhagat Singh's final years and his relationship with fellow revolutionaries such as Chandrashekhar Azad, Sukhdev and Rajguru. It also depicted the events surrounding the hanging of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on March 23, 1931.

Bobby Deol's portrayal offered audiences another cinematic interpretation of one of India's most famous revolutionaries. The film remains notable because two major Hindi films about Bhagat Singh were released in the same year.

Manoj Kumar as Bhagat Singh in Shaheed

Before the more recent portrayals of Bhagat Singh, Manoj Kumar played the revolutionary in the 1965 patriotic film Shaheed. Directed by S. Ram Sharma, the film was based on the life of Bhagat Singh and became an important part of Hindi cinema's patriotic film history.

Manoj Kumar's portrayal came at a time when historical and patriotic stories had a strong place in mainstream Hindi cinema. His performance helped introduce Bhagat Singh's story to a generation of moviegoers.

Interestingly, Shaheed was the first in Manoj Kumar's long association with patriotic cinema. He later became known for films such as Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti, which further strengthened his image as one of Bollywood's most recognisable patriotic stars.

Aamir Khan as Mangal Pandey in Mangal Pandey: The Rising

Aamir Khan played Mangal Pandey in Ketan Mehta's 2005 historical biographical drama Mangal Pandey: The Rising. The film was based on the life of the Indian soldier whose actions became associated with the uprising of 1857 against British rule.

The film took audiences back to the period before the 1857 uprising and portrayed the growing anger among Indian soldiers under British rule. Aamir's performance focused on Pandey's defiance and his decision to stand against the British.

The film remains one of Bollywood's prominent attempts to tell the story of a personality associated with the beginning of the 1857 rebellion, often described in Indian historical narratives as the First War of Independence.

Kangana Ranaut as Rani Lakshmibai in Manikarnika

Kangana Ranaut portrayed Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. The 2019 film presented the life of the legendary queen and her resistance against British forces during the 1857 uprising.

Rani Lakshmibai remains one of the most celebrated female figures associated with India's resistance to British rule. Known for her courage and leadership, she became a lasting symbol of resistance.

Kangana's portrayal brought the warrior queen's story to a new generation, with the film placing particular focus on her transformation from a young queen into a leader who took up arms against the British. The role also gave Bollywood audiences another major female figure from India's freedom struggle to connect with.

Bollywood's Connection With India's Freedom Stories
