World Liver Day 2023: Bollywood Superstar Amitabh Bachchan's Battle with Liver Disease, A Wake-Up Call for Awareness

World Liver Day is observed on April 19th every year to raise awareness about the importance of the liver and the diseases that can affect it. The liver is one of the most important organs in the body, responsible for a wide range of functions such as detoxification, metabolism, and storage of nutrients. Liver diseases and conditions such as hepatitis and alcoholism can cause advanced liver scarring, leading to liver cirrhosis. However, liver diseases are becoming increasingly common around the world, and it is important to take steps to prevent them.

Liver cirrhosis is a severe stage of liver scarring, and as it progresses, the liver produces more scar tissue, making it difficult for the liver to carry out its regular functions. According to studies, liver problems are the tenth most common cause of death in India, highlighting the importance of raising awareness about liver health.

One well-known figure who has battled with liver disease is Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan. Bachchan developed hepatitis B virus in 1982 while receiving medical treatment for a near-fatal accident while filming the movie Coolie. One of his blood donors carried the virus, which entered his system through a transfusion. As a result, his liver lost 75% of its function due to liver cirrhosis, a condition caused by various forms of liver diseases and conditions such as hepatitis and alcoholism.

While Bachchan was able to survive with 25% liver function, experts suggest that liver failure typically occurs when approximately 80 to 90 percent of the liver is damaged. Furthermore, doctors have observed liver cirrhosis cases in men and women who do not consume alcohol, indicating that liver disease is not solely caused by excessive alcohol intake.

To promote liver health and encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle, World Liver Day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of liver care. This day reminds people to take care of their liver by avoiding oily and greasy foods and making healthy lifestyle choices. Awareness campaigns also focus on educating individuals about liver diseases, their causes, symptoms, and prevention methods.

World Liver Day is a critical event that highlights the importance of liver health and raises awareness about liver diseases worldwide. By promoting liver health and encouraging people to adopt a healthy lifestyle, we can prevent and manage liver diseases, ultimately saving countless lives.
