Ludhiana Court Refuses Injunction on Release of Amar Singh Chamkila Biopic

A recent decision by the court of Additional District Judge Shatin Goyal in Ludhiana has denied a request to halt the release of the film Amar Singh Chamkila. The movie, directed by Imtiaz Ali and featuring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, is set to premiere on Netflix this Friday.

Amar Singh Chamkila Plea

The film depicts the life of the late Punjabi singer, Amar Singh Chamkila, and his second wife, Amarjot Kaur. However, a petition was filed by Ishdeep Singh Randhawa of Patiala on April 8th, seeking to stop the film's release. Randhawa claimed that the rights to Chamkila's story were acquired by his late father, Gurdev Singh, through an agreement with Chamkila's first wife, Gurmail Kaur, who purportedly sold the exclusive rights to his father.

Randhawa asserted that his father had paid Rs 5 lakh for these rights and had a written agreement dating back to October 12, 2012. He argued that as the legal heir to his late father, he and his family held the rights to Chamkila's story, thus demanding an injunction on the film's release.

However, the court rejected this plea, adjourning the case and allowing the filmmakers time to respond in writing. The next hearing is scheduled for May 6th.

Advocates Siddharth Sharma Tejas and Ravinder Kumar Sharma, representing Window Seat Films and Reliance Entertainment, argued against the injunction. They contended that the plaintiff's claims were not valid under copyright law and were time-barred. The court, in its decision, emphasized that there was no urgency to grant an injunction.

In summary, despite the legal challenge, Amar Singh Chamkila is set to premiere on Netflix as scheduled on April 12th.
