In a recent interview , Ranaut disclosed that the illustrious director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, had extended an invitation to her for an item song in the film. Bhansali, renowned for his grandiose and visually captivating cinema, is a figure many actors aspire to work with. Despite the allure of collaborating with such a celebrated filmmaker, Ranaut made the conscious decision to turn down the offer. This choice was met with a mixture of surprise and criticism from various quarters, as many were perplexed by her refusal of what was considered a prestigious opportunity. The item number, eventually performed by Priyanka Chopra, became a highlight of the film.
Ranaut's decision was rooted in her steadfast commitment to artistic integrity. She articulated her stance in the interview, stating, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali personally offered me an item number for Ram Leela. Everyone said I was mad for turning down Bhansali. I told them I couldn’t do it. Whether it’s Bhansali or anyone else, I cannot perform item numbers. Artists must maintain such integrity. How else can women be portrayed?” This assertion underscores Ranaut's dedication to preserving a dignified and respectful approach to her craft—an approach she believes would be compromised by participating in item numbers.
