Ayushmann Khurrana visits Maharashtra’s Jalna, calls for safer childhoods for children
Actor and UNICEF India National Ambassador Ayushmann Khurrana visited Jalna in Maharashtra to learn about the challenges faced by children from families affected by seasonal migration. During his visit, he interacted with children, families and community members involved in a UNICEF-supported Kinship and Community Care programme.
The programme works with the government and local organisations to ensure that children remain safe, cared for and connected to essential services when their parents migrate for work.
Protecting Children Affected by Migration
Seasonal migration can create several difficulties for children. They may face the risk of child labour, child marriage, disrupted education, neglect and violence. Children who stay behind with grandparents or relatives may continue attending school, but can sometimes face emotional stress, limited supervision and additional responsibilities at home.
The Jalna programme aims to create a strong support system at the village level. It connects children and families with education, healthcare, nutrition and psychosocial support while helping prevent child labour and child marriage.
Meeting Young Community Leaders
During his visit, Khurrana met young community leaders, including Shankar Asaram, a youth volunteer who gained the trust of his community and was later elected as a village Sarpanch. He also interacted with Pratiksha, a Class 12 student and Balmitra who has seen the impact of migration on adolescent girls.
Balmitras play an important role in supporting children's safety and education. They encourage children to stay in school and help communities identify and address risks faced by children.
Ayushmann Khurrana Shares His Message
Khurrana stressed that children should not lose their childhood because of circumstances beyond their control. He also highlighted the importance of family-based care in giving children safety, emotional support and hope.
He met 18-year-old Shilpa, who had earlier migrated with her family but has now completed school and joined a vocational course. Her journey, he said, shows how education and support can help children build a better future.
Khurrana also met a family caring for two young grandchildren while their father works away from home. With community support, the children continue going to school and receiving nutrition and immunization services.
UNICEF Supports Safer Childhoods
UNICEF India Representative a.i. Jesper Moller said that violence against children can be prevented by strengthening support systems at the local level. He appreciated Khurrana for using his voice to highlight children's right to safety, care and protection.
Khurrana also met the District Collector of Jalna and appreciated the efforts of the government, UNICEF, district administration and village communities in creating safer and more supportive environments for vulnerable children.
