Imtiaz Ali clarifies Deepika Padukone remark on ‘Cocktail’ character after online backlash
Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is making headlines for hi recent remarks about Deepika Padukone's character in Cocktail. He is at the center of online criticism after comments he made about actress Deepika Padukone during an interview went viral. Many social media users felt his remarks about Deepika’s “good girl image” were insensitive, leading to widespread discussions online. The controversy began after Imtiaz spoke about casting Deepika in the 2012 film Cocktail and explained why he believed she was the right fit for the character Veronica.
While discussing the casting process of Cocktail, Imtiaz said that Veronica’s personality was very different from the public image Deepika had at the time. According to him, although Deepika was seen as someone with a “good girl” image, he had personally seen a more carefree and lively side of her during social gatherings. He added that audiences eventually came to see that side of her as well, which made her casting as Veronica feel fresh and exciting.

However, one particular word “facade” caught the attention of the internet. Many people interpreted it negatively, and clips from the interview quickly spread across social media platforms, sparking debate among fans.
Following the backlash, Imtiaz Ali took to Instagram to clarify his intentions and address the controversy directly. He shared a screenshot of a headline discussing the online criticism and posted a heartfelt message for Deepika Padukone. In the note, he described her as a close friend and someone he deeply admires and respects.
Imtiaz wrote that Deepika understands his sense of humour better than most people and said he never intended to hurt her feelings. He also mentioned that several people warned him that his comments could be misunderstood, which prompted him to publicly explain himself. The filmmaker further added that being unkind to Deepika was “not possible” for him and ended the message by sending her love and best wishes.

Deepika Padukone first collaborated with Imtiaz Ali in the 2009 romantic drama Love Aaj Kal, which also featured Saif Ali Khan and Rishi Kapoor. The actor-director duo later reunited for the 2015 film Tamasha, co-starring Ranbir Kapoor. Both films became popular among audiences and are often praised for their emotional storytelling and performances.
On the work front, Imtiaz Ali is currently preparing for the release of Main Vaapas Aaunga, starring Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina and Naseeruddin Shah. Meanwhile, Deepika Padukone has several major projects in the pipeline, including King and Raaka.
