Remembering Suchitra Sen: Revisiting Tale of the Banned Political Drama That Made Waves
Suchitra Sen Classic Film That was Once Banned: In 1975, the silver screen was set ablaze with Gulzar's political drama "Aandhi," featuring the legendary Suchitra Sen in the role of Arti Devi. As we approach Sen's 93rd birth anniversary on April 6, it's time to reminisce about this cinematic gem that left an indelible mark despite its turbulent journey.
"Aandhi" captivated audiences with its enigmatic posters hinting, "Watch the real life of your Prime Minister." Speculation ran rife that Arti Devi's character bore a striking resemblance to the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. However, the film's narrative was more intricate, drawing inspiration from various political figures, including the likes of Tarkeshwari Sinha, a prominent Indian politician and freedom fighter from Bihar.
Even before its release, "Aandhi" encountered hurdles. Amid the National Emergency of 1975, imposed under Indira Gandhi's leadership, the film faced scrutiny, resulting in a ban on its full release. Allegations of violating the Model Election Code of Conduct surfaced, leading the Election Commission to intervene, fearing potential repercussions on the Congress party's image.
Following the Congress party's defeat in the 1977 national elections and the ascent of the Janata Party to power, "Aandhi" saw a glimmer of hope. It was finally granted clearance for release, albeit with certain scenes edited under Gulzar's supervision to align with evolving societal norms.
For Suchitra Sen, "Aandhi" stood as a testament to her unparalleled talent, marking her final venture into Hindi cinema before bidding adieu in 1978. Alongside Bollywood luminary Sanjeev Kumar, Sen's portrayal of Arti Devi remains etched in the memories of cinephiles, cementing her legacy in the annals of Indian cinema.
