Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh has reportedly been roped as Amar Singh Chamkila in Imtiaz Ali's biography. In 1988, Amar Singh Chamkila, a prominent Punjabi singer, songwriter, guitarist, and composer, was slain together with his wife Amarjot. The assassination case was never solved.
Imtiaz Ali has reportedly bought the rights to Amar Singh Chamkila's biopic. Diljit allegedly gave the film his initial approval because Amar Singh Chamkila has long been one of his musical influences. Diljit is expected to perform several of Amar Singh Chamkila's own tunes.
Imtiaz visited Chamkila's son Jaiman Chamkila's home in Ludhiana multiple times after securing the film's rights. According to reports, the film would be a mix of facts and fiction. The biopic's script has been written, and it is expected to include details about the late singer's love life, controversies, songs, and assassination. The project is being collectively produced by Window Seat Films and Reliance Entertainment.
Amar Singh Chamkila's music was inspired by his environment and the culture of Punjab, and he is regarded as one of the top performers in the state. A group of armed adolescents on motorbikes killed Chamkila and his wife Amarjot, as well as two other members of his band, on March 8, 1988. In this case, no arrests were ever made.
Diljit Dosanjh's most recent Punjabi film Honsla Rakh was a massive hit. Apart from Imitiaz's film Diljit is set to star alongside Arjun Rampal in director Honey Trehan's film. Diljit Dosanjh was confirmed to be a part of Jaswant Singh Khalra's biopic which is currently being shot in Amritsar.
