Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, '2018: Everyone is a Hero' unfolds against the backdrop of the catastrophic 2018 Kerala floods, paying tribute to the resilience and unity of the people who confronted this devastating calamity. Unlike many survival films that focus primarily on the trauma of the situation, this film distinguishes itself through its technical brilliance and a narrative approach that places the affected individuals at the forefront, delving into their personal struggles and triumphs.
The multi-starrer movie offers a compelling portrayal of the harrowing circumstances faced by individuals as they battled for survival during the devastating floods in the state. Its selection as India's official entry for the Academy Awards underscores the film's powerful storytelling and cinematic prowess.
Last year, India's official Oscar submission was 'Chhello Show' which, although not nominated, contributed to a landmark year for Indian cinema. "Naatu Naatu" from the film "RRR" won the Best Original Song category, and "The Elephant Whisperers" secured the Best Documentary Short Subject award. Furthermore, Shaunak Sen's "All That Breathes" received a nomination for Best Documentary Feature.
The 96th Academy Awards are scheduled to take place on March 10 next year.
