The film is the latest spin-off in the franchise that revolves around the story of a kid's transformation into a supervillain before he turned into a secret government spy.

It does not disappoint the fans and even shows that the supervillain Gru was always a hero at heart.
The film is set in the late 70s, between the storyline of Minions (2015) and Despicable Me (2010). The Minions, including Kevin, Stuart, and Bob, arrive at Gru's house requesting him to hire them as they witnessed his super-villainy in the first film where he steals the Queen's Crown.
