The Story Behind Bandi Chhor Divas
The story takes us back to the 17th century, during the time of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was imprisoned at Gwalior Fort. According to Sikh tradition, he was kept there because of the political and religious tensions of that period.
Inside the fort, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji met 52 Hindu kings who had also been imprisoned. These rulers had been living behind the fort's strong walls for a long time, away from their families and kingdoms. Despite their difficult situation, Guru Ji remained calm, strong and full of faith. His presence gave hope to everyone around him.
The 52 Kings and the Special Robe
After some time, Emperor Jahangir ordered the release of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. However, Guru Ji did not want to leave the fort while the 52 kings were still prisoners. He believed that freedom should not be limited to one person when so many others were suffering.
According to popular Sikh tradition, Guru Ji agreed to leave only if the imprisoned kings could also be released. A condition was set that the kings could walk out holding onto Guru Ji's robe. To make this possible, a special robe was prepared with 52 separate tassels, allowing each king to hold one.

As Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji walked out of the fort, all 52 kings followed him, holding the tassels of his robe. One by one, they stepped out of the prison and welcomed their freedom. This beautiful moment became a powerful symbol of unity, kindness and selfless leadership.
