SYL, or Satluj-Yamuna-Link Canal, is an abbreviation. To share the waters of Punjab with the state of Haryana, a 214 km long canal that is now under construction was built. It was first proposed that the SYL Canal be built in 1982, with the idea being that water from Punjab would be piped to regions nearby like Haryana.

The Satluj-Yamuna-Link Canal, which permits the states of Punjab and Haryana to share water, is discussed in Sidhu Moosewala's SYL. Controversy erupted everywhere after its distribution. After the government filed a legal complaint, the song was later taken down from YouTube in India.

Through his song “SYL,” Sidhu Moose Wala not only raised awareness of the situation but also urged young people to “Save Punjab’s water and rivers.”
