Malayalam Movies Boycott EXPLAINED: What's The Conflict Between Kerala Film Industry and PVR INOX?

The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) has announced that Malayalam movies won't be shown in PVR and INOX theatres until there's compensation for the loss suffered due to a disagreement with the Kerala Film Producers’ Association (KFPA). This decision comes after PVR INOX refused to screen new releases like "Aavesham," "Varshangalkku Shesham," and "Jai Ganesh," as well as halted screenings of earlier Malayalam films.

Why Malayalam Films Won't be Distributed to PVR INOX?

Despite the popularity of these movies, PVR INOX has chosen not to exhibit them, creating a void in Kerala's cinema scene. This disagreement stems from a conflict between KFPA and PVR INOX regarding the distribution of movie content. KFPA established a new content-providing company that requested exclusive business from Kerala theatres, prompting concerns from PVR INOX.

What is the Issue?

The core of the issue lies in the Virtual Print Fee (VPF), a charge paid for screening films in multiplexes. Kerala producers oppose this fee, claiming it significantly reduces profits. PVR and INOX objected to this, leading to the suspension of Malayalam film screenings not only in Kerala but also in other states where dubbed versions were shown.

South Films in Recent Times

This move adversely affected filmmakers who had acquired dubbing rights for recent Malayalam releases, impacting their business. For instance, Telugu versions of films like 'Premalu' and 'Manjummel Boys' were removed from theatres in Telugu-speaking states.

Kamal Gianchandani, CEO of PVR Pictures Limited, criticized the practice of exclusively sourcing Malayalam movie content through one channel, labeling it as "anti-competitive" and prohibited.

Despite the standoff, recent releases like "Aavesham," "Varshangalkku Shesham," and "Jai Ganesh" have been well-received, hinting at continued success for the Malayalam film industry. Several promising films are slated for release in the coming months, promising further excitement for cinephiles.
