Arijit Singh Opens Up About Auto-Tune in Indian Music; Says AR Rahman Beautifully Introduced It
Arijit Singh, the widely celebrated singer in India, has been making headlines lately for his concerts, upcoming songs, and candid statements. With a massive fan following both on social media and globally, Arijit Singh has earned a special place in the hearts of music enthusiasts. Recently, he shared insights on the concept of auto-tune and revealed the pioneer who introduced this technology in the Indian music scene.
Arijit Singh, is among those rare singers who don't rely on auto-tune. He has captivated audiences with his live performances, showcasing the genuine allure of his voice. However, in the music industry, many singers turn to auto-tune to enhance their vocals. Arijit Singh shed light on the origin of auto-tune in India during a recent interaction with an entertainment portal.
He said, "Auto-tune can’t turn a non-singer into a singer. It’s not like you sing anything, apply auto-tune and it will sound like it’s in tune. It’s not possible. When people really liked to listen to AR Rahman’s songs, it was him actually who started using auto-tune in a very subtle way, That’s how a lot of singers started sounding beautiful. When a singer sings, they sing with emotion. And when they sing with emotion, it is never perfect, they go away from the sur (tune) a little bit, most singers except Sonu Nigam, he can’t go out of tune I feel. Some music composers don’t like it at all like Mithoon Sharma, and Vishal Bhardwaj. AR Rahman also doesn’t do it anymore, earlier he used to. Now he goes with whatever voice is there. Pritam’s music always has auto-tune, to make it sound better.”
According to Arijit, auto-tune is not a magical tool that can transform a non-singer into a skilled vocalist. He emphasized that it cannot make any random singing sound perfectly in tune. Arijit credited renowned composer AR Rahman for introducing auto-tune in a subtle manner in India.
