Threads: The Microblogging App That's Going Viral with Celebrities and 2 Million Users

Meta, the parent company of social media giant Facebook, has recently launched a new app called Threads, which aims to provide an alternative to Twitter. With this move, Meta seems to be targeting users who are seeking a social media platform different from Twitter, which is owned by Elon Musk and has undergone frequent changes.

Threads: Meta's Text-Based Alternative to Instagram

Threads is essentially a text-based version of Meta's popular photo-sharing app, Instagram. The company claims that Threads offers users "a new, separate space for real-time updates and public conversations." The app was made available for download in Apple and Google Android app stores in over 100 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Japan. The release took place just after midnight on Wednesday in the UK.

Celebrities Embrace Threads

Notably, several well-known celebrities have already joined the Threads app. Celebrity users include renowned chef Gordon Ramsay, pop star Shakira, and Mark Hoyle, better known as the YouTuber LadBaby. In addition to these celebrities, prominent figures from the Indian entertainment industry, such as Karan Johar, Rannvijay Singha, Karan Kundrra, Twinkle Khanna, Niti Taylor, Diljit Dosanjh, Parineeti Chopra, Nakul Mehta, Mix Singh, and Bunty Bains, have also joined the app.

Microblogging Experience: Threads vs. Twitter's Features

Screenshots shared with the media indicate that Threads offers users a microblogging experience similar to Twitter. The app includes buttons for liking, reposting, replying to, or quoting a "thread." It also displays counters that show the number of likes and replies a post has received. Unlike Twitter, Threads allows users to create posts with up to 500 characters, exceeding Twitter's 280-character limit. Additionally, users can include links, photos, and videos up to five minutes long in their posts.

Meta's Measures to Ensure a Secure Environment on Threads

Existing Instagram users will be able to log in to Threads using their current usernames and follow the same accounts they do on Instagram. However, new users will need to set up an Instagram account before accessing the app.

Addressing User Dissatisfaction and Changes

Meta has emphasized its commitment to user safety by implementing measures such as enforcing Instagram's community guidelines and providing tools to control who can mention or reply to users. These efforts aim to create a secure and controlled environment for users on the Threads app.

With Threads, Meta appears to be taking direct aim at Twitter, capitalizing on the dissatisfaction expressed by some users and advertisers due to the frequent changes implemented under Elon Musk's ownership. By providing an alternative social media platform that combines aspects of Instagram and Twitter, Meta aims to offer users a fresh and engaging experience while addressing their concerns about privacy and user control.
