Filmmaker Payal Kapadia has made history by winning the Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival for her film "All We Imagine As Light." Her film was a strong contender for the festival's top award, the Palme d'Or, which was ultimately awarded to Sean Baker's comedy-drama "Anora." Kapadia's victory marks the first time an Indian director has won the prestigious Grand Prix.

"All We Imagine As Light" received widespread acclaim, making it the first Indian film in 30 years, and the first ever by an Indian female director, to be featured in the main competition at Cannes. This achievement is a significant milestone in Indian cinema.

All You Need to Know About Payal Kapadia

Kapadia's journey in the film industry has not been without its challenges. In 2015, she was a prominent figure in a student protest at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). The protest was against the appointment of actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhan as the chairman of the institute. Students argued that Chauhan's appointment was politically motivated and that he did not meet the standards set by previous chairmen.

The protest, which lasted 139 days, included an incident where students allegedly confined FTII Director Prashant Pathrabe in his office over academic issues. This led to police intervention and the arrest of some protesters. Kapadia and 34 other students faced charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including unlawful assembly and rioting. The case is still ongoing, with the next court hearing scheduled for June 26.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Kapadia's accomplishment, stating that India is proud of her historic achievement. He highlighted her remarkable talent and the inspiration she provides to a new generation of Indian filmmakers. "This prestigious accolade not only honours her exceptional skills but also showcases the rich creativity in India," Modi said in a post on X.
