According to the Netherlands government, the emissions of nitrogen oxide and ammonia must be reduced close to the natural areas that are part of a network of protected habitats for endangered plants and wildlife stretching across the European Union.

While thousands of tractors have been gathered outside the parliament building, Prime Minister Mark Rutte stated that the farmers have the right to protest but not to break the law.
