Where there is a will, there is a way is a well-known saying. It means that everything is possible in this world, provided one has the necessary will power and determination to do it. Following this, Punjab’s Balbir Singh Seechewal pulled off something spectacular which took everyone by surprise. Balbir Singh Seechewal with his determination managed to clean the 160 km river in Punjab without any help from authorities. Balbir Singh Seechewal, who is now popular as Eco Baba, gave his 16 years of voluntary service to rejuvenate 160 km- long Kali Bein which was reduced to a “filthy drain.” Besides cleaning, he has also beautified the river banks and also built bathing ghats and brick roads. According to a report in Hindustan Times, when Seechewal took on the mission to clean the rivulet 19-years ago, the entire stretch was clogged with silt and was polluted by effluents from industry and residential areas. For his selfless effort, Balbir Singh Seechewal received much praise from various sections of the society. He was also honoured with Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, in 2017.
