Her effortless breathless singing which is called as ‘Hek’ in Punjabi made her win this crown. We have got some really nice episodes from her life which will make you take pride in her. Becoming The First Ever Teacher In Her Hometown

Born in British Punjab occupied area of Kothe which is now in the district of Gurdaspur, she emerged as an educated woman out of the girls at her native place. She was then first one to pass JBT and become a teacher. Hence, becoming the first ever female teacher is one such excerpt from her life which adds to the level of inspiration.

Beginning The Song With A ‘Hek’

This is one of the most special excerpts from her life. Beginning any song with the longest ‘Hek’ and holding the breath to sing ‘HO’ is one such episode of her life which has made her reside in the hearts of people. What adds to the sparkles is the fact that she was introduced to music and folk instruments by her husband Kirpal Singh Bawa who was a singer himself. Standing Ovation From Bollywood Actors

Once an event was organised by Punjab Association in Mumbai where her singing performance fetched standing ovation from veteran stars of Bollywood like Prem Chopra, Raj Kapoor and Pran. Gurmeet Bawa raised the bar of the talent owned by Punjabis in the ‘Mayanagri Mumbai’. When Raj Kapoor made a song request for the song, ‘Main Jatti Punjab di, Meri Nargis Wargi Akh’, it must had been a special moment of her life.

Receiving Awards

Being awarded and gaining appreciation for all hard work feels great to everyone. She too felt amazing in her life for the same reason. She is the recipient of State Award by Punjab Government in 1991, Sangeet Puruskar by Punjab Natak Akademi, National Devi Ahillya Award by Madhya Pradesh government in 2002 and Shromani Gayika Award by Punjabi language department in 2008. The list seems endless. Well her exceptional work also seems endless!

Losing Her Daughter

It is difficult for any mother to see death of her child. She went through this extreme pain recently when her elder daughter Lachi Bawa died due to cancer. She is a mother to three girls out of which, Lachi and Glory Bawa are singers. The trio has performed a number of times all together. So, this excerpt from her life can be considered as the the most painful one.

Moving ahead with good memories, we wish Gurmeet Bawa a very Happy Birthday! With age, she is growing all the more melodious. It is amazing to see her being associated with music at this tender age also. She might have grown 76 this year but she is still a young Punjaban from heart.
