Filmmaker Karan Johar Opens Up About Struggling with Body Dysmorphia

Karan Johar, one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the Indian film industry, is widely regarded as a craft master. A National Film Award-winning director and producer, Johar is also celebrated as a star-maker who has provided numerous budding actors with the platform to showcase their talents. Despite his public persona as an extroverted, fashion-forward celebrity who speaks his mind, Johar has revealed a more vulnerable side of himself—his struggle with body dysmorphia.

Karan Johar Reveals About Body Dysmorphia

In a candid conversation with journalist Faye D'Souza, Johar discussed his ongoing battle with body image issues and how it has affected his life. Reflecting on his childhood, he shared that he always felt uncomfortable with his appearance. This discomfort has persisted into adulthood, impacting his self-esteem and personal interactions.

"I have body dysmorphia; I am very awkward getting into a pool," Johar confessed. He admitted that despite his efforts to overcome these feelings, he still struggles with them daily. This insecurity is one of the reasons why he often opts for oversized clothing, regardless of his actual weight. He explained that he constantly perceives himself as overweight and prefers to keep his body hidden from view.

Johar further elaborated on the extent of his discomfort, revealing that it affects even his most private moments. "I self-body shame myself all the time," he admitted, noting that he needs to have the lights off during intimate situations. These issues, stemming from unresolved childhood insecurities, have led to significant mental health challenges for the filmmaker.

Two years ago, Johar experienced a severe panic attack, which prompted him to seek therapy and medication to manage his mental health. He emphasized the importance of addressing such issues early on through counselling and treatment to prevent them from festering and causing further harm.

Karan Johar remains professionally active and is currently gearing up for the release of his next production venture, "Bad Newz," starring Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri, and Ammy Virk.
